In an interview with USA Today published on June 3, 2005, Tyson said, “My whole life has been a waste – I’ve been a failure.” He continued: “I just want to escape. I’m really embarrassed with myself and my life. I want to be a missionary. I think I could do that while keeping my dignity without letting people know they chased me out of the country. I want to get this part of my life over as soon as possible. In this country nothing good is going to come of me. People put me so high; I wanted to tear that image down.” Tyson began to spend much of his time tending to his 350 pigeons in Paradise Valley, an upscale enclave near Phoenix, Arizona.

The Reverend Al Sharpton, who supported Tyson back in the 1990s when he was released from a three-year prison stint—after a conviction for a rape charge for which Tyson still maintains his innocence—describes the chance of seeing his friend fight one more time as “almost like going to see a rare piece of art in a museum.”

The singles were deleted for various reasons, including his 2018 break-up with Erika Costell.

The tattoo drew significant attention before the fight. Tyson took time off of training to get it, which trainer Jeff Fenech would later say was a contributing factor to the fight being rescheduled by a week. Some questioned Tyson’s physical and mental fitness to fight. Experts including dermatologist Robert A. Weiss expressed concerns about Tyson boxing while the tattoo healed; Etienne said that he would not go after the tattoo.
